Mr Benjamin Thomson completed his training in general surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and completed his specialist training in Scotland.

As a Hepatopancreaticobiliary and Upper gastrointestinal surgeon, he treats predominantly benign and malignant tumours of the liver, pancreas, bile duct and pancreas. He also treats all aspects of gallstone disease as well as offering endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) in the treatment of both gallstones and tumours of the bile duct. He has advanced training in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Ben continues to work as a general surgeon treating abdominal hernias as well as emergency surgical conditions.

Ben continues to have an active involvement in teaching, surgical training and research and is an examiner in General Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is the head of the upper gastrointestinal tumour stream and deputy director of trauma at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is also a surgical representative on the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) and has previously worked in Samoa on behalf of the Victorian government following the 2009 tsunami.
