The Eye Specialist Institute is the longest continuously running ophthalmic practice in Queensland having been started by the late Dr Noel Sampson in 1957 in Shepard House, which is located in Scarborough Street opposite the current police station. The late Morgan Burkett took over the practice in 1975 and moved it to Tweed Heads and to 127 Nerang Street. This was a purpose built building that housed a pharmacy and OPSM dispensary facing onto Nerang Street. Following Dr Burkett's untimely death in a surfing accident in 1980, Dr Darryl Gregor took over the practice and in 1985 built Brockway house, which was Queensland's first licensed day theatre building with initially one-day theatre and then two-day theatres. We eventually outgrew that building and in 1998, we opened our current practice at 2 Short Street, which is a three theatre day theatre complex run by Ramsay health.

The practice now has three locations at 2 Short Street Southport, 1 Lake Orr Drive Varsity Lakes and 72- 80 Marine Parade Coolangatta and caters for a wide range of ophthalmic procedures. We pride ourselves in being ophthalmic innovators and our role is to make sure that we always give the very best and the very latest technology to the people of the Gold Coast. Eye Specialist Institute is the newest vision from Dr Robert Bourke, with the sole purpose of providing an exceptionally high standard of patient care utilising the most up to date technologies and procedures.
