Dr Wilson is a cardiologist specializing in interventional cardiology (coronary and structural) and adult congenital heart disease. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1999 and completed advanced training in cardiology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He completed three cardiology fellowships in Melbourne, Edinburgh and Toronto respectively. He undertook two years of training in interventional cardiology and adult congenital heart disease at the Royal Melbourne Hospital prior to working overseas for four years.

His fellowship at the Edinburgh Heart Centre, Scotland focussed on complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). There, he developed proficiency in:

  • radial access PCI
  • fractional flow reserve and intracoronary imaging
  • complex PCI, including left main PCI and rotablation
  • PCI for chronic total occlusions (CTO) using the ‘hybrid’ approach (including antegrade dissection re-entry and retrograde approaches).

He subsequently completed a two-year clinical and interventional adult congenital heart disease fellowship at the Toronto Congenital Cardiac Centre for Adults. He received specific training in:

  • Structural interventions (device closure of interatrial defects, ventricular septal defects and patient ductus arteriosus, coarctation stenting, left atrial appendage closure etc.)
  • Diagnostic catheterization and interventions in complex congenital heart disease patients
  • Transcatheter valve interventions (including transcatheter aortic and pulmonary valve replacement, balloon mitral valvuloplasty and paravalvular leak closure).

He is undertaking a PhD through the University of Melbourne, which centres on congenital heart disease, in particular, outcomes of patients with a systemic right ventricle and mechanisms for ventricular failure. He also created and manages a multi-centre database in the United Kingdom for CTO PCI procedures.

Dr Wilson is actively involved in teaching of medical students, junior doctors and physician trainees and co-ordinates the cardiology teaching program for the FRACP lecture series. Dr Wilson currently holds a public appointment as a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital
