Dr Welendawe graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery in Colombo, Sri-Lanka. A year as a resident doctor at a base hospital in Colombo followed before a further three years of training in emergency medicine and surgery at King George Hospital in London. He arrived in Australia in 2006 where his work and training continued in Queensland before he opted to take on two years as a registrar based in rural communities, initially at Stawell, in Maryborough. He has obtained a fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) by completing the Australian GP training programme. He has been working as a GP in Australia for just over ten years. His main interests are chronic disease management, men's health and preventative care.
