Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Tom is a general paediatrician and infectious diseases physician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. He combines his clinical work with a research academic appointment at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI).

His clinical interests include managing children with a broad range of general paediatric issues (e.g. abdominal pain, asthma, eczema and allergy, constipation, recurrent infections, headaches, challenging behaviour, speech delay, language difficulties and disorders of sleep). He has a particular interest in infant feeding problems.

Dr Tom Connell is the clinical Director of the Department of General Medicine at the Royal Children’s hospital. He is a recognised authority on the diagnosis of paediatric TB. He has in excess of 60 peer-reviewed publications. He was the recipient of a career development award through the MCRI in January 2014 to further develop his research. He has a keen interest in the immunodiagnosis of childhood TB and infections in the immunocompromised hosts. Tom is heavily involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
