Dr Tanya Yuen (Neurologist)

Dr Tanya Yuen is a highly skilled and caring neurosurgeon who works collaboratively with her patients to achieve the best possible outcome. She is Australian born and trained and holds Consultant appointments at the Melbourne Private, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western General Hospitals. Initially Dr Yuen completed a Dental degree from the University of Melbourne and went on to pursue Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in the United Kingdom where she also obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of London. On her return to Australia Dr Yuen changed careers, obtaining her Medical degree from the University of Melbourne and completed Neurosurgery training in 2012. During this time she also completed a PhD in “Tumour Associated Epilepsy” through the University of Melbourne.

Through her training she won of a number of prestigious scholarships including the Melville Hughes Surgical Trainee Scholarship, NHMRC Medical Training Scholarship, John Lowenthal Surgical Trainee Scholarship and the Pfizer Neuroscience Research Scholarship. An author of a number of publications in peer reviewed journals and neurosurgery textbooks, Dr Yuen is also co-convenor of arguably one of the most prestigious neurosurgical meetings in Australia “Controversies in Neurosurgery”. Dr Yuen is a regular reviewer for the official journal of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience.

Dr Yuen is passionate about education and mentorship of medical students. She is the Academic Supervisor for Medical Students for the Department of Neurosurgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and an Examiner for the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. A Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Yuen is also an active member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and the Australian Medical Association. She is also a Committee member of the Women In Surgery Section within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Dr Yuen has extensive experience in the management of neuro-oncological conditions, particularly brain and spinal tumours as well as neurotrauma, hydrocephalus, chiari malformations and complex spinal surgery. Dr Yuen is committed to providing excellent care for her patients throughout their treatment. She is committed to attaining not only excellent surgical outcomes, but also complete patient satisfaction.
