Stewart Proper was born in Melbourne and attended school at Carey Grammar where he was a Prefect and House Captain. He graduated M.B., B.S. from the University of Melbourne in 1989 and entered the Victorian Orthopaedic Training Programme in 1996, successfully gaining his Orthopaedic Fellowship in 2001.
He then commenced overseas orthopaedic fellowships at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield in the UK concentrating on the use of allografts in primary and revision arthroplasty for 12 months before becoming the inaugural Hand and Upper Limb Fellow at the prestigious Pulvertaft Unit at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. There he was involved in all facets of upper limb surgery from microsurgery, trauma and arthroplasty and to research and the teaching of surgical skills. He then travelled to London, Ontario, Canada, where he was a Fellow in the renowned Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St Joseph's Hospital, the home of some of the most respected Upper Limb minds in the world! There he was involved in state of the art surgery, research and teaching at hospital, university, provincial and national levels.
He returned to Melbourne in 2003 to practice upper limb surgery. He has held positions at The Alfred and Sandringham Hospitals in both clinical and teaching roles. He has presented a multitude of papers on various subjects relating to surgery on the upper limb and continues to be involved in research at the highest level. He continues to strive for new and better techniques in all areas of upper limb surgery.
