Originating from South Wales, Dr McCarthy trained in Cardiff [UK] and then joined a large training General Practice in the North of England where he worked happily as a partner for 20 years before making the move to Newcastle NSW in 2014. He is enjoying the new lifestyle and currently work fulltime in General Practice between Charlestown Square and Redhead surgeries. His wife [Dr Juliet Kershaw] is also a G.P. at the surgery.
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Australian General Practitioners and enjoys all aspects of General Practice. He has a particular interest in health promotion, disease prevention and Chronic Disease Management and promotes the importance of supporting patients to be active in their own health care through patient education and healthy lifestyle choices.
Outside of work he enjoys running and swimming to keep fit, walking and travel and relaxing with a good book or a film.
