Assoc. Prof. Tan graduated from the University of Otago in 1998 and went on to complete specialist training in orthopaedics in Newcastle, NSW. He gained hand and upper limb training with fellowships in Liverpool, UK and Wrightington, UK. He then returned to Australia in 2010 where he has been working as an orthopaedic hand and upper limb surgeon at the Gold Coast University and Robina Public Hospitals and Allamanda Private Hospital.

As a result of his commitment to excellence in orthopaedic surgery, Assoc. Prof. Tan is heavily involved in registrar training at the Gold Coast University Hospital and is actively involved with the Centre of Musculoskeletal Research at Griffith University.

His special area of interest is the full range of hand and upper limb conditions and he is committed to providing patients with a bespoke management plan to suit their individual functional needs.
