Shyamala Huilgol was born in Sydney but spent much of her early childhood in the USA. She matriculated from Blackwood High School in Adelaide, winning the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Prize. She graduated with Honours from the University of Adelaide in 1991, having won several undergraduate prizes.
Her Specialist Dermatology training was undertaken in the main public hospitals of Adelaide and at St John's Institute of Dermatology, London. She obtained her Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD) in 1998 and then undertook an American College of Mohs Surgery-accredited Fellowship in Mohs Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Thereafter, she worked in the Dermatological Surgery and Laser Unit at St John's Institute of Dermatology, St Thomas' Hospital, London.
She has worked in Private Practice in Adelaide since 2000 and moved premises in 2009 to her current purpose-built Consulting and Day Surgery facility in Kent Town. Her areas of work include Skin cancer treatment, including Mohs Surgery, and Laser treatment. She is committed to offering her best clinical service to her patients and is assisted in this by her excellent support staff and detailed printed patient information. She communicates regularly with her patient's referring Doctor and General Practitioner and ensures patients have a follow up treatment plan on leaving her care.
She is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide. She is a Senior Visiting Medical Specialist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she undertakes teaching of advanced Dermatologic surgery to Dermatology trainees. She is also a Senior Visiting Medical Specialist at the Women's and Children's Hospital where she is a member of the multi-disciplinary Vascular Anomalies Clinic. She enjoys regular teaching of Dermatology trainees, General Practitioners, Medical students and other colleagues. She has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and has made extensive contributions to the world literature in Mohs Surgery.
