Shom has diverse rheumatological interests ranging from the management of inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, and difficult gout with particular procedural expertise in caudal epidural injections used to relieve back pain. Shom has extensive experience in the care of patients with acute and chronic multi-system illnesses, and the peri-operative medical care of surgical patients.

Shom maintains a keen interest in musculoskeletal and sports medicine, deriving from a long-standing interest in personal fitness. His ongoing pursuits are resistance training and competitive tennis, which he has played at Victoria Pennant level. Shom has advised national-level athletes on training, nutrition, injury management and rehabilitative strategies. As a result, he has developed a holistic approach to his practice of medicine in general and musculoskeletal medicine in particular.
