Mr Shane Blackmore specialises in sports injuries, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee, hip and shoulder. This includes all aspects of knee, hip and shoulder surgery. Completing subspecialty fellowship training in London and New York, he returned to Melbourne with world-class experience in the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

He is one of only a few Australian trained surgeons to have his training accredited by both the Arthroscopic Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Shane is also a member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) and a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).

Shane has managed sports injuries in a variety of college and professional athletes both in London and New York City. The highlight of his training in New York was working as an assistant team physician for the New York Rangers as they made the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 20 years.

Shane has dedicated his practice and training to perfecting arthroscopic surgery knowing this focus of minimally invasive surgery will lead to the best outcomes for his patients. This minimally invasive approach extends to Anterior Hip Replacement where Shane was trained by the first surgeon to bring this technique to New York City.

The New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases is a world leading institution which rarely awards ACGME accredited Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowships to foreign trained surgeons. Shane was matched to this highly competitive 12 month fellowship position where under the supervision of a number of prominent surgeons, including Dr Laith Jazrawi and Dr Thomas Youm, he completed a high volume of arthroscopic procedures primarily of the knee, hip and shoulder. These ranged from simple injuries occurring in the home or workplace, to complex injuries in recreational and professional athletes.

His subspecialty training focused on the latest arthroscopic techniques for knee ligament reconstruction (ACL), meniscal repair and transplant, cartilage restoration and joint preservation, shoulder stabilization and rotator cuff repair as well as femoro-acetabular impingement and labral tears of the hip.

As part of his fellowship in New York, Shane also learned modern hip and knee arthroplasty techniques including Anterior Hip Replacement.

Preceding this, Shane was awarded the prestigious Calvert Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Hospital of Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in London where he worked alongside some of the UK’s most preeminent sports surgeons. This 6 month fellowship supervised by Mr Andrew Wallace and Mr Philip Ahrens had a subspecialty focus on arthroscopic treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries. While in London Shane also had the privilege of working with Mr Andy Williams, a world renowned knee ligament surgeon.

Born in Melbourne, Shane graduated from University of Melbourne Medical School before completing his specialist Orthopaedic surgical training in Melbourne in 2011. Shane has published articles and book chapters as well as technique videos on many aspects of arthroscopic surgery. Shane continues to teach medical students and future orthopaedic surgeons through his association with the University of Melbourne and his public hospital appointments at Austin Health and Eastern Health.

Married with a young family, Shane continues to chase his childhood pursuits of less than competitive baseball, tennis and golf.
