Sem Liew graduated from University of Melbourne (St Vincent’s Clinical School) and then completed his advanced training in oncology at Austin and Monash Hospitals. After obtaining fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians in medical oncology, Sem has undertaken a 2 year fellowship at the Austin Hospital in the sub-specialty areas of lung and brain cancers.
Sem is actively involved in oncological research. He has published scientific papers, review article, and abstracts, many of which have been presented at both local and international conferences. He is an invited speaker at national conferences and invited reviewer in local and international oncology journals.
As well as being a medical oncologist and clinical researcher, Sem currently holds the National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) postgraduate scholarship and Pfizer Research Project Grant researching the role of using epigenetics to improve chemosensitivity in lung cancer. His work was shortlisted as the finalist at the Australian Lung Cancer Conference, and Austin Medical Research Foundation Young Investigator Award.
Sem is a multi-lingual clinician. He speaks and writes many other languages other than English, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, and Malay.
Outside of work, Sem enjoys his time with his wife and daughters. He also enjoys tennis, golf and basketball.
