I founded Southern Urology with my colleague, Richard Fletcher, in 1999. I had just returned from advanced surgical work in the USA working as Assistant Professor at UC Davis Medical Centre in Sacramento.
On my return to Australia I was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at Monash Medical Centre and immediately joined Richard Fletcher forming Southern Urology.
I operate at Cabrini Hospital, Malvern, Waverley Private Hospital and St John of God, Berwick. I consult from the Southern Urology rooms at 7 Chester Street, Bentleigh East, and Southern Urology Berwick, Level 2, 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick, every week. I also consult out of Waverley Private Hospital consulting rooms.
Along with the partners at Southern Urology, we provide 24 hour, seven day per week comprehensive on-call to all our patients.
Background I am Melbourne-born in 1965. I was educated at Brighton Grammar where I was Dux of the Junior School and Captain of the school tennis team and Vice Captain of the First XVIII football team.
I completed my medical degree at the University of Melbourne from 1983 to 1988. My first years as a doctor were at St Vincent’s Hospital and in 1992 I worked in the Baragwanath Hospital in South Africa as a Surgical Registrar. This is the largest trauma hospital in the Southern Hemisphere providing the most extensive surgical experience possible.
I commenced Urology training in Australia in 1994 completing full accreditation in 1997. The final year was a full time research post developing a new surgical approach for the treatment of kidney stones using microsurgical techniques in a rabbit model. This work was recognised by the British Association of Urological Surgeons winning the prestigious Silver Medal for Research – the first non-European to achieve this award.
The following year I was awarded the Urological Travelling Society Fellowship and appointed Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California Davis working in the area of Reconstructive Urology and Prosthetics. Shortly after returning I undertook voluntary work in New Guinea to develop procedural skills amongst the local indigenous urologists.
I have maintained a broad interest in urological education and training. From 2007 to 2010, I was a Supervisor of the urological trainees at Monash Health. I continue my role in education of advanced trainees. I am on the Medical Advisory Board of St John of God Hospital in Berwick during a very exciting time for the hospital with a new campus currently being developed.
Outside work I am married with two children. My wife, Adaobi, is a Perinatal Psychiatrist working with Glow Clinic. I am a member of Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and still play competitive tennis. I am committed to fitness and health and have recently formed a Men’s Health and Screening practice called Vital Men’s Health and Screening. My interests include snow skiing, Mustang motorcars and family activities.
