Sam is an Australian and internationally trained orthopaedic surgeon with a particular interest in reconstructive and trauma surgery of the hip and knee. Sam grew up on the family farm in Manjimup, Western Australia before moving to Perth to attend UWA medical school. He completed his internship and residency at Sir Charles Gairdner and Royal Perth Hospitals then undertook advanced training in orthopaedic surgery in WA. After completing training, Sam spent six months working as an orthopaedic surgeon in rural WA. He then spent two years on fellowship in Australia and overseas. In Canberra sam was fellow to Professor Paul Smith. Here he received training in complex and revision surgery as well as pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery. Sam then moved to Brisbane working with Professor Ross Crawford. In addition to specialised joint reconstruction surgery, Sam gained hands on training in robotic joint replacement, assisting Professor Crawford with Australia’s first robotic total hip. After 12 months in Australia, Sam moved to London, Ontario to undertake their prestigious adult reconstruction fellowship. University Hospital in London performs almost 2000 joint replacements a year and is renowned for complex and revision cases. Here Sam gained the North American approach to joint replacement and revision surgery, gaining experience in direct anterior hip replacement and hip resurfacing surgery. Sam returned to Perth in 2017 to commence practice. He is a consultant at Royal Perth Hospital. He works privately at the Perth Hip and Knee Clinic and consults and operates at St. John of God Subiaco, St. John of God Mt. Lawley and Joondalup Health Campus.
