Ron (Romano) Pirola is a consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist with a special interest in pancreatic disease – e si parla italiano.

Professor Pirola has had a long and distinguished career providing gastroenterology and hepatology services at The Prince of Wales Hospital.

Ron Pirola graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney and through his pancreatic research obtained a Doctorate in Medicine at the University of NSW. His post-doctoral training was at Royal Free Hospital (London) and Mt Sinai School of Medicine (New York).

Professor Pirola has received continuous National Health & Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) funding for over 25 years for his research at the University of NSW where he co-founded the highly successful Pancreatic Research Group. He is the author of a text book, several book chapters and over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He tutors at Notre Dame University (Sydney) and is a Senior Examiner for the Australian Medical Council.

Ron Pirola and his wife Mavis have four children and eight grandchildren. For their joint community activities, Ron and Mavis have been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia and the Papal Honours of Knight and Dame of the Order of St Gregory.
