He has been the Director and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in teaching hospitals in Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. Most recently he was Director of Women’s and Newborn Services at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in South Australia. He has taught medical students, junior doctors and specialist trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for many years.


A/Professor Petersen is actively involved in Colposcopy training for specialist trainees within the RANZCOG and is a Course Director for the College of Surgeons in the Emergency Management of Surgical Trauma courses. He has completed three additional years of sub specialty training in gynaecological oncology and has been an examiner for the Australian Medical Council.

A/Professor Petersen has held several prestigious roles within the medical profession including Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, Medical Co-Lead of Transforming Health South Australia and a Board member of an Area Health Service.


A/Professor Petersen is also a Colonel in the Australian Army. He has performed active medical military overseas service. This service included deployment to Banda Aceh following the Boxing Day Tsumani and involvement in the Pacific Partnership with the US Military that provided free O&G healthcare services to disadvantaged women in the Pacific.

A/Professor Petersen accepts referrals in his areas of special clinical interest. These are:

  • Colposcopy and lower genital tract disease
  • Menopause
  • Pelvic pain and endometriosis
  • Post menopausal bleeding
  • Counselling women with a history of breast cancer about genetic gynaecology cancer risk
