Robert MacFadyen is Professor of Medicine and Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Hobart Hospital and the University of Tasmania. Qualifying in his native Scotland initially with honours in Pharmacy and Pharmcology he went on to complete a PhD awarded for research into the biophysics of newborn lung in infants of diabetic mothers. Working on a topic closely aligned to a medical problem he entered medical school in 1982 thereafter qualifying MB ChB at the University of Glasgow. Training in postgraduate medicine in Glasgow, London, Dundee and Edinburgh he completed an MD in Cardiovascular Medicine followed by consultant appointments in medicine and cardiology in Inverness Scotland before relocating for ten years at the University of Birmingham in England as a Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Cardiology and Consultant Cardiologist at the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences at Dudley Road Hospital.

In 2012 he came to Australia as Director of Internal Medicine and Cardiologist at Ballarat Health Services in Victoria with a teaching appointment at the University off Melbourne Rural Clinical School. Moving to THS North in 2017 he has worked across the state at all four major hospital units as a cardiologist and moved to take a leading role in helping UTAS translate clinical science into the undergraduate medical programme for the next generation of doctors serving Tasmania. He is passionate about teaching students of medicine to think for themselves and provide the highest standards of care, and diagnosis but most of all listening to patients voices in context. He has guided several postgraduate fellows through higher degrees into careers in research and cardiology practice and written many papers; editorial commentary; reviews and book chapters.

Robert has served an a postgraduate international examiner in Medicine; Royal College journal editor; reviewer and guidelines reviewer for both European and North American international standards of care statements on a broad range of cardiology topics; including Hypertension; Heart failure; Atrial fibrillation care; Syncope investigation and programming standards for implantable cardiac devices. He has served terms as a sub specialist on the UK General Medical Council Disciplinary Panel; the Scottish Medicines Consortium and the European Society of Cardiology Cardiovascular Pharmacology Consensus group.
