Dr Robert Hutchinson (Anaesthetist)

Dr Hutchinson graduated from Southampton University in 1978 with an honours degree in medicine and qualified as a Fellow of the College of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland in 1983. He then worked as a registrar in anaesthesia at The Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, followed by a year as Lecturer in Anaesthesia at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.   In 1985 Dr Hutchinson came to Australia where he worked for 18 months as a fellow in the Intensive Care Unit of The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. He then travelled to Perth where a year in the ICU of Sir Charles Gardener Hospital completed his specialist training in Intensive Care Medicine. His consultant career commenced in Albury-Wodonga where he joined the Albury Anaesthetic Group and was Director of Intensive Care at the Albury Base Hospital.   In 1989 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Acting Director of Intensive Care at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin.   Following two years in this post he returned to a Senior staff Anaesthetist position at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. In 1994 he joined the Albert Street Anaesthetic Group. During his first 10 years of private practice he was heavily involved in Obstetric anaesthesia, setting up an out of hours specialist obstetric anaesthetic service.   His current practice is mainly short stay surgery involving Faciomaxillary, ENT, Gynaecological, Urological, and Endoscopic procedures.
