Inspired towards ophthalmology from his first job as a resident, which involved a lot of eye work, Robert Nave still finds surgery the most interesting and challenging aspect of his work. He finds great pleasure in the precision work involved in eye operations and believes ophthalmology represents a very good combination of medicine and surgery.

Robert is a foundation member of the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group, performing refractive surgery since 1991. Nominating “making the blind see” as the most satisfying element of his chosen field, Robert is continually gratified by the feedback from laser surgery operations, in particular. “Of all the patients I treat, the ones that seem to be the happiest are those who have had refractive laser surgery. The most common response to the surgery is people saying, ‘It’s the best thing I ever did.’

“The biggest changes in my time as an ophthalmologist is in the area of cataract surgery, which used to involve a week in hospital and big, thick glasses to wear post-surgery. Now, it’s a day surgery procedure and glasses are generally no longer a part of post-op life.”

While technology has made surgery much more precise, Robert acknowledges that greater skills are now required of surgeons and that keeping up to date with new techniques and equipment is an important part of his job.
