After initial jobs in general medicine, neurology and neurosurgery he returned to Cambridge for basic ophthalmic surgical training. Richard passed the final FRCOphth examination in 1998 with the highest marks in the year, resulting in the award of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Harcourt Medal. In 1999 Richard moved to the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (UK) for higher surgical training, where he developed his specialist expertise in diseases of the vitreous and retina.
Between 2004 and 2015 Richard worked at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield, UK) as a vitreo-retinal consultant, treating the full range of retinal diseases in both children and adults, including diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and eye injuries. The hospital is one of four national centres for Ocular Oncology and Richard was a key member of this team, developing new diagnostic techniques for these often challenging problems. As well as treating retinal diseases Richard is skilled in small-incision cataract surgery and was Lead Clinician for the Cataract Service in Sheffield between 2006 and 2015.
Richard has an active research portfolio, including large multi-centre clinical trials, and has published more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals on subjects related to retinal disease and cataract surgery. He also acts as a reviewer for a number of high-profile ophthalmic publications.
Richard moved with his family to Hobart in 2015 and is looking forward to the new opportunities that come from living and working in one of the most beautiful locations in the world.
