Dr Raymond Steele (Anaesthetist)

Dr Steele graduated with a medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1991 and gave his first anaesthetic in 1992 under supervision at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Prior to making a full time commitment to Anaesthesia Dr Steele worked as an intern and resident at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Mercy Hospital for Women, where he gained a Diploma in Obstetrics Dr Steele began full time anaesthetic work in 1995 in Norwich England and then entered the anaesthetic training program based at the Austin Hospital in 1996. During his anaesthetic training he rotated through the Austin and Repatriation Hospitals, Bendigo Base Hospital, PANCH, Monash Medical Centre, The Mercy Hospital for Women, and The Royal Children’s Hospital. In 2001, Dr Steele became a specialist anaesthetist and Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) after completing a provisional fellowship year in Kingston, Canada. Dr Steele joined the Albert Street Anaesthetic Group in 2006 and continues to work in public at the Austin Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital, where he was the Director of the High Dependency Unit for 5 years. Dr Steele remains involved in research in obstetric anaesthesia and quality assurance and has just completed compiling the Royal Women’s Hospital Handbook of Obstetric Anaesthesia. Dr Steele has also worked as a volunteer anaesthetist in Tonga in 2003 and Bangladesh in 2007 as a member of Australian Interplast teams and more recently in Vanuatu as part of an Australian Urology outreach team.   Dr Steele maintain a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia, but also regularly provides anaesthesia for facio-maxilliary surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery, gynaecological surgery and general surgery.   As part of his continuing education, Dr Steele participates in the ANZCA Maintenance of Professional Standards Programme and AVANT Risk Management Programme, and has recently become an examiner for the final exam of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
