Born in New Zealand, Ray graduated from the University of Otago in 1971 attaining his MB ChB. He spent a number of years in the UK where he attained an MRCP. He gained extensive experience in Hospital and General Practice in the UK before migrating to Australia in 1978 setting up a practice in Bundaberg Queensland.
He later went to Western Australia where he worked in Aboriginal Health settings, firstly in Carnarvon, then Wiluna where he also served in the capacity of Mayor for some years. In 1997 he moved to Tewantin, setting up the Noosa Outlook Medical Centre.
