Ram has been practising as a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist since 1996. After graduating with his medical degree (BMBS) in 1985 from Flinders University Adelaide, he undertook specialist medical training in Paediatrics, Haematology and Oncology. He obtained two medical specialist qualifications, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Paediatrics in 1993 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) in Haematology in 1995. After a 6-month stint as a Locum Haematologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Ram took up a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist post at the Mater Children’s Hospital Brisbane between 1996 and 2007 during which time he was also the head of the unit there. In 2007, Ram returned home to Adelaide to take up a Consultant position in the Haematology and Oncology Department at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH); he was also the Director of the Haemophilia Treatment Centre at the WCH until 2017. Ram sees himself first and foremost as a clinician. While he has been involved in collaborative research in his career and acknowledges its importance, what he enjoys most is direct patient care and forging strong bonds with the children and their families. He is also committed to lifelong learning and teaching, having been heavily involved in the postgraduate training of doctors becoming paediatricians over many years. He has been an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Paediatrics on numerous occasions. Born in Singapore of Indian ethnicity, Ram emigrated to Australia with his family in his early teens and has been a proud Australian citizen since 1978. He is an excellent armchair watcher of football and supports the right AFL club. He loves all forms of music and plays the guitar (badly!). His other interests include reading, travelling and learning about the world.
