Dr Rajan Singh Patheja is a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon working at Queensland Eye and Retina Specialists. He also holds public positions at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the adjacent Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS). He is happy to help you with a range of conditions including; epiretinal membranes, macular holes, retinal detachments, vitreous haemorrhage, cataracts, dislocated lenses and secondary scleral fixated lenses, diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, intravitreal injections and retinal laser treatments.

Dr Patheja spent his formative years on the Gold Coast and has now settled in Brisbane with his young family. As School Captain, he achieved the highest possible academic ranking (OP1) and Headmaster’s Award. He attended medical school at the University of New South Wales where he was awarded First Class Honours as well as the Prince of Wales Hospital’s Graham Macdonald and John Coleman Prizes for the best combined clinical and academic performances in medicine and surgery respectively. Returning home to South-East Queensland, he undertook his pre-vocational Junior Doctor training on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane before completing his specialist ophthalmology training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO). He underwent a further two years additional training and Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and STARS. He has also previously experienced observerships in the Ophthalmology Departments of Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in London and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya. He is a Fellow of RANZCO and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Dr Patheja has published numerous papers in international ophthalmic academic journals and is involved in the mentoring, training and teaching of Ophthalmology Registrars, Residents and medical students through his public posting. He holds the academic title of Lecturer with the University of Queensland. He regularly attends ophthalmology meetings to keep up to date with the latest evidence and techniques.

Outside of work, Dr Patheja spends most of his time with his wife and baby boy as well as his extended family. He plays squash regularly and tries to find time to keep working on his golf swing! He loves to get the beach when he can and is an avid reader. He plays saxophone, piano and guitar and has a particular soft spot for travelling and exploring the world.
