Dr Paul Luckin (Anaesthetist)

Paul trained as an Ambulance Paramedic in Tasmania, before doing his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. This included the Baragwanath Hospital, then the largest hospital in the Southern hemisphere. He completed his specialist training in Anaesthesia at the University of Natal, including King Edward VIII Hospital, the second largest in the Southern hemisphere. Both are busy hospitals with a high acute trauma caseload. Paul was a cardiac anaesthetist at Wentworth Cardio-thoracic Hospital in Durban, Green Lane National Cardiac Unit Auckland, and the Royal Hobart Hospital, before moving to Queensland. Paul spent 8 years in a Mountain Rescue team in Africa, and was Honourary Consultant, Accident and Emergency Medical Services Natal. He is a Director of the National Police Search and Rescue Manager’s Course, teaching medical aspects of SAR at the State and National level. He advises the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Police SAR teams nationwide on survivability during rescue operations. He was President of Royal Life Saving Society Australia –Tasmania Branch, former Chairman of Training Branch, St John Ambulance Queensland, and is currently Medical Director, Medical Services Branch, St John Ambulance Queensland. As a Commander in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve Paul has served in Bougainville, East Timor and then Timor Leste, the Bali Bombings Medical Retrieval Team, Solomon Islands, the first team into Banda Aceh following the 2004 tsunami, and in Afghanistan. His wide range of interests includes anaesthesia for major orthopaedic and laparoscopic surgery, general , urological and gynaecological surgery, with an emphasis on good pain control and minimisation of side-effects.
