Dr Neil Sharma is an ophthalmologist with special interests in cataract surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, refractive surgery and glaucoma management.
After completing his specialist training at Sydney Eye Hospital, Neil undertook a fellowship in general ophthalmology at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine and Macquarie University Hospital. During this time, Neil engaged in formal training in laser cataract and refractive surgery. He graduated with a Master of Medicine (Refractive Surgery) from the University of Sydney.
Dr Sharma then trained as the Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina at the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the world’s largest centres of health sciences and medical research. He gained extensive experience in the management of conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease and other rare retinal diseases. Neil trained in the use of new anti-VEGF medications, the latest multi-spot retinal lasers, wide-field angiography, and the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT). Dr Sharma was involved in several research and audit projects in addition to his clinical work. He gave numerous teaching presentations at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University.
Dr Sharma has a strong interest in research, and has published over 25 articles in the peer-reviewed literature. He has presented at numerous local, national and international ophthalmology conferences. He is a journal reviewer for several peer-reviewed medical journals. Neil has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) undergraduate Prize and Medal, the 2013 RANZCO Eye Foundation Medical Retina scholarship, and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Patron’s Prize.
Dr Sharma is a staff-specialist consultant ophthalmologist at Westmead Hospital. He is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong. He graduated with a Master of Public Health from UNSW in 2004.
