Dr Patel graduated from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 2008. He then commenced his internship at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in the north of Adelaide. He decided to pursue Basic Physician Training at Flinders Medical centre, and after successfully completing his exams, he moved to Perth to pursue specialist training in General Medicine. He spent a year at Fremantle Hospital and another at Royal Perth Hospital where he worked in renal and respiratory medicine. This multi-centre experience across a few states made him a versatile clinician, using the positive experience at each hospital to mould his own clinical style.

Dr Patel completed his core training in General Medicine and then began dual training in Allergy and Immunology at the Alfred Hospital, one of the two largest centres in Victoria for this specialty. Whilst here he managed complex allergy problems, immunodeficiency and also looked after severe asthma patients both as an inpatient and in clinic. He was fortunate to be a part of some of the clinical trials of new "biological" agents in Asthma, an experience which was invaluable to him and which he continues to be part of.

He moved to Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2016, the other major centre in Victoria for this speciality. Whilst working there, he looked after patients with autoimmune disease and mastocytosis in addition to allergy and immunodeficiency. He is currently active in reviewing patients in clinical trials of the latest "biological" therapies in asthma, nasal polyps and mastocytosis. Dr Patel also performed penicillin, anaesthetic drug and other drug allergy testing while he worked there. He supervised patients undergoing bee venom desensitisation.

Dr Patel is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and is also an associate member of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) and the European Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (EAACI).

He consults in Epping and Werribee.
