Dr Mitchell Lawlor is a glaucoma surgeon and neuro-ophthalmologist. After his ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital, he undertook a further three years of sub-specialty training. Following this, he spent four months in India and Timor Leste, performing cataract surgery. Dr Lawlor undertook an observership at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA. He then moved to London to complete dual fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology and surgical glaucoma, both at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Moorfields is the largest eye hospital in Europe and provides unparalleled experience in the medical and surgical management of complex eye disease. Dr Lawlor has a PhD in bioethics from the University of Sydney, and during his time at Moorfields Eye Hospital he was the chief investigator on two clinical trials, and co-investigator on a further four. Dr Lawlor continues to have an active research program with a clinical academic position at the University of Sydney. His current research reflects interest in the underlying mechanism of glaucoma as an optic neuropathy. Dr Lawlor is looking at novel methods of sub-classifying the glaucomas, methods of distinguishing glaucoma from other optic neuropathies, as well as reviewing some of the changes of the brain seen in glaucoma. Dr Lawlor has received peer reviewed research funding from groups such as the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia and the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation. He has over 20 original research publications in peer-reviewed journals including Ophthalmology, Survey of Ophthalmology and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr Lawlor has skills in managing glaucoma in all its forms, but has particular interest in normal tension glaucoma, the role of cataract surgery in angle closure, and the surgical management of complex secondary glaucomas.
