For approximately 20 years, Michael Salzberg has specialised in the psychiatric care of people with physical illness (a field known as consultation-liaison psychiatry). He heads the consultation-liaison psychiatry team at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He has extensive experience with patients with neurological illnesses (neuropsychiatry) and many other kinds of illness, including gastroenterological disorders. He is an associate professor in the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry and is very involved in research and in teaching of medical students, psychiatric trainees and general medical residents about the psychological aspects of physical illness.
