Dr. Michael Loughnan is an ophthalmologist specialising in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the front of the eye including: cataract, corneal graft and pterygium surgery.
He graduated from Monash University with honours, gaining high distinctions in both medicine and surgery, receiving the Prince Henry’s Hospital Senior Medical Staff award for the top graduating student.
He completed a doctorate at Melbourne University studying under Professor Sir Gustav Nossal and went on to complete training in ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
He completed a fellowship in diseases of the front of the eye, including cataract, corneal and pterygium surgery, at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University, USA.
He returned to the Melbourne University Department of Ophthalmology as a Senior Research Fellow and was a Senior Staff Specialist on the Corneal Clinic and past Chairman of both the Eye Section and Senior Medical Staff at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
He is a founding director of the Victoria Parade Surgery Centre (VPSC), the largest eye day surgery centre in Australia. He is also actively involved in teaching and organising the teaching program at the Pacific Eye Institute, a training facility for South Pacific eye care professionals in Suva, Fiji.
He is an author of an internationally published textbook on diseases of the front of the eye, the second edition of which was released in May 2011, as well as a booklet on keratoconus for patients published in Feb 2012.
