Dr Michael Leibowitz was born and educated in Johannesburg, South Africa. After obtaining a bachelor degree in science, he completed his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and later his internship in medicine and surgery at Johannesburg General Hospital.
After 3 years of training in pathology, Dr Leibowitz changed his specialty to dermatology and obtained a registrar post at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere). Subsequently he graduated with a Fellowship in Dermatology from the College of Medicine of South Africa (FF Derm) and continued as a consultant at Baragwanath Hospital as well as establishing a private practice in Johannesburg.
Dr Leibowitz and his family immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand where he worked in both private practice and hospital. He has since relocated to Australia and worked at Taree on the mid North Coast and now at Eastern Suburbs Dermatology.
His extensive experience covers a wide range of differing dermatological disorders. Surgery for skin cancer, however, remains one of his keen interests. He was awarded Fellowship of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine for his extensive experience in dermatology in Africa and is also a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.
Dr Leibowitz is married and has three daughters. Outside of medicine, he is interested in art (painting), chess, travel, film and literature.
