Dr Khoo is a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist with 30 years’ experience working both in private practice and as a Senior Visiting Psychiatrist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Her areas of expertise include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mood Disorders, Women’s Mental Health, Personality Disorders and Military-Related psychiatry.
Dr Khoo’s current practice focuses on medicolegal impairment assessments. This is specifically in the area of child sexual abuse in institutions, personal injury, industrial issues and medical negligence. She provides medico-legal assessments and opinions to the Legal Profession, Insurers and Employers, including the Australian Defence Force. In many instances, she is jointly appointed in non-litigated situations by both defendants and respondents. Additionally, Dr Khoo works with employers and insurers to assess and assist worker’s returning to the workplace.
Dr Khoo mentors and provides professional supervision for younger colleagues, as well as other mental health professionals.
Dr Khoo has extensive experience of the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2013 and is trained in the use of the Guidelines for Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (GEPI) in including the 2016 amendments. She is experienced in assessments involving the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS) in accordance with Queensland’s Civil Liability Act 2003, and the AMA IV and V (American Medical Association) Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. She is familiar with the Mental Health Act 2016, in particular in regard to Section 422 and Sections 27 and 28 of the Queensland Criminal Code.
Dr Khoo currently holds a statutory appointment as a Deputy Chairperson, Medical Assessment Tribunal-Psychiatric, Office of Industrial Relations, Queensland Government. She held a statutory appointment as an Assisting Psychiatrist to the Mental Health Court of Queensland for five years until 2015 and prior to this was a Reporting Psychiatrist to the Court.
Dr Khoo has held a range of positions on the Executive of the Queensland Branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of psychiatrists, for 12 years till 2009. She is a Foundation Member of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry, RANZCP. She is a member of the Australian Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. She is also a member of the Medicolegal Society of Queensland and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
