Mark Bassett graduated in medicine at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and trained in gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy in Canberra, Brisbane, and the USA. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in gastroenterology and endoscopy certification in 1979 and subsequently completed MD (Qld) and a post-doctoral fellowship in liver diseases (hepatology) at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. He also holds qualifications in hospital management and has served in a number of leadership roles. He is the author of many scientific publications with a particular interest in iron storage diseases. He is currently an Honorary Visiting Medical Officer at Canberra Hospital and a Professor in the ANU Medical School. He holds unrestricted specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (MED0001368359).
