Dr Marcus Robertson (Gastroenterologist)

Dr Marcus Robertson, a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with special interests in liver diseases and liver transplantation, was born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula. Marcus graduated from Monash University in 2006 as Dux of the entire medical course. He also received a number of prestigious awards including the Australian Medical Association Prize and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Prize in Clinical Medicine for being the top Victorian medical graduate. Throughout this time, Marcus also trained as a competitive swimmer and represented Australia at the highest level.

Marcus undertook his specialist Gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre and the Austin Hospital, Melbourne. During this time, he received a number of awards including: the Monash University Distinguished Teacher of the Year for outstanding teaching of medical students; the Orgnanon prize for Australian Registrar Research; and the Monash Health Prize for clinical excellence – an award for excellence in clinical medical practice, service delivery, teaching and organizational contribution.

In 2014 and 2015, Marcus moved to Scotland to further his training and undertook a Hepatology and Liver Transplant Fellowship at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. During this time he wrote a number of book chapters for medical textbooks, including the prestigious Oxford Textbook of Medicine. Marcus has published multiple research articles in the fields of liver transplantation, endoscopy, gastrointestinal bleeding and liver conditions such as hepato-renal syndrome. In 2014, he was nominated for the Young Investigator of the Year award for research he presented to the Australian Gastroenterology Week conference. He also received a President’s award for research submitted to the American Academy for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2013 for his research relating to Hepatitis B.

Following his return to Australia, Marcus was offered a Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Medicine Consultant position at Monash Health. Marcus has a specialty interest in liver diseases, hepatitis and cirrhosis. He also maintains a broad range of interests in all areas of Gastroenterology including irritable bowel syndrome, endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), inflammatory bowel disease and Fibroscan.

Marcus is passionate about health promotion and education and continues to speak to school groups about issues such as drugs and alcohol, smoking, health living practices and combining sport and school.
