Dr Manjula Kannangara is a General and a Developmental Paediatrician. She works across Child Development services in Queensland Children’s Hospital, Inala Indigenous health services, Community controlled Indigenous health services and the Murri school (Aboriginal and Islander Independent community school) in Brisbane

Dr Kannangara, together with Dr Andrea McGlade (Developmental Paediatrician) had lead a pioneering role in establishing and developing services of Paediatric clinics within Community Controlled Indigenous health services in Brisbane and Outer Metropolitan areas starting in 2012. These Paediatric clinics started with few clinics on the North and South sides of Brisbane, which, at present has expanded to a number of Aboriginal medical clinics with many new Paediatricians on board – some of whom undertook the postgraduate training working with children and families in these clinics.

The Clinics’ Paediatric Model of Care was established as a family centred shared-care model where the families work well with the Primary Care Provider (General Practitioner) in the clinic, the Allied-Health team, the Child Health Nurse and the Family Well-Being team. The paediatric services take pride in cultural sensitivity and culturally safe practice. The assessment, diagnosing and planning of treatment is done both in individual and in team settings. The follow up is coordinated through diligent case-conferencing, which involves strong teamwork within the medical services, schools, department of communities and other external support services. Case-conferencing is an integral part of a clinic day and hand-over discussion at the end summarises the day’s work to maintain a high level of communication and organisation within the workplace. This model of care has enabled the children with various developmental concerns, access support in a very timely manner.

Dr Kannangara was a staff specialist in Hervey Bay and Maryborough hospitals. She was also the acting Director of Paediatrics and performed duties of Director of Clinical training and student coordinator during her time there.

Dr Kannangara graduated from University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka as Dux of the year in 1993 and completed her paediatric postgraduate training in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. She was a Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics at Faculty of Medicine ,University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka for a short period prior to migrating to Australia.
