Stefanie works with young people and adults who are experiencing mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, grief, self-harm behaviours and emotional dysregulation. She also supports people with their adjustment to significant life changes such as parenthood or to a major medical diagnosis like cancer. Her doctoral thesis focused on the impact of maternal depression on the child, and she has a particular interest in supporting mothers and fathers through the perinatal period.
It is important to Stefanie that the people she works with feel respected, safe, and heard when they see her. She has a warm, calm, and considered approach, and believes that everyone has a story worth trying to understand. She recognises the strength in people and enjoys working collaboratively to help clients realise their potential to think flexibly and develop ways to live a life that is meaningful, fulfilled, and consistent with their values.
Stefanie uses evidence-based approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
Stefanie has previously worked in an early psychosis team, and in psycho-oncology, renal services, and perinatal mental health in major hospitals across Victoria. She is also experienced working with young people with borderline personality disorder.
Outside of her clinical practice at Birch Psychology, Stefanie is also a university lecturer and Research Fellow. She believes that her involvement in these roles helps her keep up with the field of psychology and ensures she is providing clients with treatment that is current and evidence-based. She has also written several mental health resources commissioned by the Commonwealth government (such as clinical practice guidelines and factsheets) and her articles and reviews have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Stefanie is a registered Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator. Circle of Security is an evidence-based parent education program designed to enhance attachment security between parents and children. Stefanie can provide this in individual, couples, or group sessions. Please contact Birch Psychology if you would like further information.
