Born in the Scottish city of Glasgow, Karen came to Melbourne as a child, but she hasn’t completely lost her accent. As an obstetrician, Karen is dedicated to providing the best obstetric care for her patients throughout pregnancy, birth and in the first few weeks of newborn life. As a mother of two young children who were born with the help of IVF, Karen is able to share practical tips from her own experiences of pregnancy and birth, as well as share her delight in parenting babies and toddlers.
Karen obtained her medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1996, and then completed most of her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Mercy Hospital for Women before pursuing further experience in high-risk obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine and ultrasound at the Royal Women’s Hospital.
While Karen looks after all types of pregnancies, she has a special interest in high-risk pregnancies and IVF pregnancies. She has held a consultant post in Obstetrics at the Royal Women’s Hospital, where she worked in the antenatal clinic and birth suite. Her role at the hospital involved giving tutorials for trainee obstetricians and teaching surgical skills such as caesarean sections. Karen is also an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and has worked as a medical advisor for Channel 7.
Outside of work Karen enjoys travelling, cooking, and spending time with her husband and two children.
