Josh Butt is a Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist with public appointments as the head of endoscopy at Northern Health, Gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Albury Wodonga Health. He works privately in both Melbourne and Albury.
Josh completed his Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2004 receiving the top academic result for his year level and two scholarships for Indigenous research in South America. Completing physician training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, he undertook advanced training in Gastroenterology at the Austin/Northern Hospitals and Box Hill Hospital, with broad experience in general gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy. Josh then completed two years of additional advanced endoscopy training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
During his fellowship years, Josh developed proficiency in several complex gastroenterological procedures including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic mucosal resection (endoscopic removal of large polyps), luminal stenting and double balloon enteroscopy.
Josh has broad interests, and enjoys all aspects of gastroenterology. He is proficient at treating all gastroenterological conditions, with additional skills in interventional endoscopy procedures, the management of biliary and pancreatic disorders as well as luminal conditions including coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. He is experienced in managing abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea, including the use of the low FODMAP diet.
Josh’s approach is one of collaboration and respect. He strives to provide the highest quality, individualised care to his patients and develop lasting therapeutic relationships. He is interested in the patient experience, and has conducted research aiming to optimise this.
Josh lives in the inner north of Melbourne with his wife and daughter. He speaks Spanish as well as English.
