John's first cardiology training was undertaken at Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne.
This was followed by two years as cardiology fellow at Montreal General Hospital, with time spent in angiography, early echocardiography and research interest in unstable angina and beta blockers.
On return to Melbourne, John commenced practice in Dandenong incorporating echo and stress testing. This was the first cardiology practice for the area.
He was subsequently appointed director of the newly created Coronary Care Unit at Dandenong Hospital – a position he held for 25 years. Here he consolidated his active interest in acute coronary syndromes and fostered the unit’s involvement in research.
As principal investigator for the Dandenong site, he and his now longstanding practice nurse Marianne Martin ran research programs involving:
• a number of large multi-centre thrombolytic trials; • several ACE inhibitor trials; and • a major contribution to the Australasian LIPID cholesterol lowering trial with a statin.
The outpatient component of this research was mainly run through the Dandenong Cardiology Group’s King Street clinic.
In the last decade John has had a growing interest in heart failure management but continues an active practice in general cardiology, contributing to the delivery of echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram and exercise stress testing. Cardiovascular monitoring (Holter and blood pressure) is run in co-operation with Marianne Martin under the banner of “PACE Monitoring”.
John attends heart failure clinics at Casey Hospital and St John of God Hospital (Berwick) and can facilitate admissions required for inpatient management of chronic heart failure to either of these hospitals.
