Dr Bemelen achieved his medical degree through Melbourne University and St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, graduating in 1984. He worked in varied medical and surgical rotations, including a full year as Fellow in Intensive Care at St. Vincent’s, before undertaking specialist anaesthetic training in the St. Vincent’s Hospital training scheme in Melbourne. He completed this training in 1991. In 1993, Dr Bemelen joined Eastern Anaesthetic Group, which later merged to become the current Canterbury Anaesthetic Services. He was Chairman of this group from 2001 to 2009. He works regularly at a number of private hospitals, including Cabrini, Epworth Eastern, The Avenue and Sir John Monash Private Hospitals. Dr Bemelen has been a consistent participant in the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists initiatives requiring evidence of on-going Continuing Medical Education, including the current CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Program.
