Joel moved to the Northern Rivers after spending 19 years in the Royal Australian Navy. Among other positions, Joel was an officer in the navigation branch and a ship’s diving officer before studying medicine at the University of Sydney in 2004. Following his studies Joel worked at St George Hospital in Sydney for two years before joining the Navy’s Submarine & Underwater Medicine Unit at HMAS Penguin, Sydney in 2010. As the Officer-In-Charge from 2012, Joel was responsible for the medical care and selection of the Navy’s elite clearance divers and submariners as well as the medical management of military and civilian diving accidents.

Joel has lectured extensively on diving medicine and is on the Executive Committee for the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society.

Beyond diving medicine, Joel has a special interest in children’s health. A dad of three young kids, he holds a Diploma of Child Health from the Children’s Hospital Westmead in Sydney and has extensive experience caring for families at the Dee Why General Practice where he practiced part-time from 2010 to 2015.

Having spent 2015 travelling around Australia with his wife and their three young kids, Joel has now settled in the Northern Rivers.
