James trained for 7 years in London after commencing physician training at Sydney and St Vincents hospitals.
He returned to Sydney in 1980 and was appointed director of the CCU and ICU at Sutherland Hospital. James was involved with many landmark clinical trials in Myocardial Infarction. He commenced the cardiac rehabilitation unit and Heart and Lung team and played a major role in the development of the cardiac catheter laboratory which opened as the Sutherland Heart Clinic. James is currently Consultant Emeritus in the cardiology department.
