Dr. James Griffiths completed his anesthetic training at St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He then undertook fellowship training in obstetric anaesthesia at the Royal Women’s Hospital and in neurosurgical and trauma anaesthesia at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is now a visiting specialist anaesthetist at the Royal Women’s Hospital as well as in private practice. His clinical interests include anaesthesia for obstetrics, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmological surgery.

Since completing his anaesthetic training, James has completed a Masters of Epidemiology and a Post Graduate Certificate of Clinical Ultrasound, both at the University of Melbourne. He has strong involvement in anaesthetic research and has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals on a variety of subjects including post-operative analgesia for caesarean section and gynecological oncology, and the application of ultrasound in clinical anaesthesia. He is also a co-author on several Cochrane reviews.

In 2016, James took sabbatical leave and completed a Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis through the South Australian Society of Hypnosis. He is interested in exploring potential applications of clinical hypnosis in settings such as needle phobia, perioperative anxiety and chronic pain.
