Dr Semerli is founding director and principle at Specialist Eye Surgeons. His main interest is in cataract surgery, using the latest techniques and lens implantation, including astigmatism correction. He also has a committed interest in pterygium and eyelid treatment including eyelid reduction surgery (blepharoplasty) as well as general ophthalmic conditions.
Dr Semerli grew up in Melbourne, where he then completed his Medical degree with honours, and spent his early doctoring years at the renown Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He then had the privilege of completing his specialist ophthalmic training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. In 2010, he undertook a year of remote regional outback work in the Northern Territory which he continues to do for a period each year, helping restore sight in the underserviced indigenous population. This was often characterised by complex cataract and anterior segment surgery, with which he has become well versed.
In 2011 he returned home to Melbourne and served as staff ophthalmologist at Northern Health and also continued teaching medical students at the Royal Melbourne Hospital through his University of Melbourne tutorship position. He was also acting head of ophthalmology at Northern Health for a period of time until commencing private practice in the purpose-built center at Specialist Eye Surgeons. In this role, he is able to provide the community with high quality care in a convenient, local location.
Whilst continuing commitments to the remote outback, Dr Semerli also consults and assists in teaching the next generation of ophthalmologists at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
Dr Semerli is well traveled, and enjoys working within a culturally diverse population. He is fluent in Turkish, and also has some ability in Arabic and the Italian language. When he’s not busy treating patients, he enjoys jogging, gymming, yoga, and travelling.
