Dr Carter completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in Otago, New Zealand in 1993 and then worked for three years in Auckland as house officer in an Oral Maxillo-Facial Surgery unit. Dr Carter then obtained his FRACDS primary fellowship in 1995 and in 1997 commenced OMS training in Adelaide. After two years of surgical training, Dr Carter entered medical school and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Adelaide.

Dr Carter went on to complete two further years of advanced surgical training and obtained his RACDS fellowship in the special field of OMS in 2004. During his post-graduate training Dr Carter also obtained a Doctorate in clinical dentistry after publishing research on the local management of haemostasis in patients with coagulopathies; in particular, patients taking Warfarin.

Specialty interests include all aspects of OMS, from dentoalveolar to major corrective jaw surgery.

Dr Carter has published numerous articles in local and international literature.
