Dr Gerard O’Brien was born in Jeparit Victoria, moving to Horsham with his family at an early age. He was educated at St Brigid's primary school and Monivae Collage before studying medicine at the University of Melbourne, following graduation, Gerard did his residency at Broken Hill Hospital and then completed Obstetric and Paediatric training at the St Margaret's Hospital in Sydney. Following this, Gerard spent three years in England working in a broad range of hospital positions, gaining experience in various medical subspecialties. On his return to Australia, Gerard and his father Dr Mark O’Brien, built a medical clinic in Roberts Avenue, which began operations in 1978. Following his father’s retirement in 1987, Gerard was joined by Dr Doug Jinks. In 2011 when the Wimmera Medial Centre opened, Gerard and Doug transferred their practice to the new premises.
