Dr Thurnwald grew up in Adelaide. While he was studying dentistry he joined the Regular Army and served full time for 11 years. He then underwent specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery before starting his own practice on the Gold Coast. He has both research and coursework master’s degrees from the University of Queensland in Oral Biology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the only person ever to earn both degrees. He also has general and specialist fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. For service to the dental profession he has been elected to fellowship of the International College of Dentists. He established the maxillofacial surgery service at the Gold Coast Hospital. He helped to establish the Griffith University Dental School and was made a Doctor of the University in recognition of his contribution. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Griffith University Dental School.

Dr Thurnwald is an active member of the Army Reserve and has just completed 40 years in uniform. He is currently the senior dental officer in the Army in Queensland with the rank of colonel and was made a member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in 1990 for work he undertook in the Regular Army.
