Associate Professor George Matalanis is renowned for his pioneering work in aortic arch surgery without circulatory arrest. He is the Director of the Cardiac Surgery Unit at Austin Health which is one of Victoria’s largest health care providers and he is internationally respected for this work. The Cardiac Surgery Unit at Austin Health offers special expertise in coronary bypass graft surgery, cardiac valve surgery, aortic surgery, advanced aortic and mitral valve repair, minimally invasive mitral valve, tricuspid valve and ASD surgery and all aspects of acute and chronic thoracic aortic disease including both open and stent graft repairs. Since the commencement of Associate Professor George Matalanis’s appointment at Austin Health in 2007 he has pursued surgery for pathology of the thoracic aorta with keen interest. With progressive development of surgical techniques, some of which were pioneered by himself (such as the ‘branch first technique’) and his Austin Health colleagues, the outcomes are some of the best by world standards. He has also been heavily involved in implementing a total arterial revascularisation program at the Austin, being the first to introduce the use of the radial artery graft to the Austin Cardiac Surgery Unit, and this has been subsequently widely adopted by most centres in Australia. His main interests are Aortic root and arch surgery, Thoraco-abdominal surgery, Mitral Valve Repair, Surgical Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation, and Ventricular Resynchronisation Therapy.
