Dr. Fabian Purcell is a Graduate of Monash University, Fellow of the Australian New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and currently in full time private Anaesthetic practice. He has a public appointment at St Vincents Hospital as a senior instructor in patient simulation at the St Vincents Hospital Education Centre. His academic interest includes Human Factors influences on the conduct of Anaesthesia and Crisis Resource Management. In 2014 He was awarded the Rupert Harvey Scholarship from the St Vincents Dept of Anaesthesia which will allow further training in post simulation debriefing at Harvard University in 2015. He currently instructs on the Effective Management Anaesthetic Crisis (EMAC) Course for ANZCA and lectures to final year Medical undergraduates on Medico-legal issues. He joined the Royal Australian Naval Reserve since 1988 with subsequent full time deployments to the Middle East and SE Asia. He was awarded the Prince of Wales Award, in 1998 resulting in academic attachments to Stanford University and the Uniformed Services University Health Sciences, Patient Simulation Laboratories. In 1999 he graduated first of his class at the RAN Staff Acquaint Course, and was awarded the Lonsdale Medallion. He subsequently graduated from the Canadian Forces Joint Reserve Command and Staff Course in, Toronto, Canada. He was Directing Staff (Reserve) at the Australian Command and Staff Course for the RAN Staff Acquaint Course from 2001-2010 with teaching responsibilities for the Course’s Maritime Strategic Studies and Military Operational Planning Modules.
He has nearly completed his undergraduate Law degree at Deakin University
In his private life Dr Purcell is married to with two children. He enjoys skiing and remains an enthusiastic but inept Bonsai gardener.
